Barcelona

August 23, 2017

My daughter was planning
a vacation there, entranced

by the vivid excess
of Antoni Gaudi

who became an adjective,
as opposed to Frank Lloyd Wright

whose works are an anachronism.
She wears black, sleek with feathers,

perched on neo-gothic heels
with platforms. She will become

an architect but won’t drive.
At fourteen I was driving

without a license. A van
beckoned boldly – adventure

writ at once large and cozy.
I sang Long Cool Woman

in a Black Dress, Saturday
in the Park. Her favorite

is Leviathan from The Tenth
Sub Level of Suicide –

“Who’s the killer?” when vans
are weapons of destruction

and Barcelona becomes
one more place not to go.
