Poets Reading the News is a digital newspaper bridging poetry and journalism. We call it journalism in verse.

As news events converge with our lived experiences, more and more people are turning to the ancient art of poetics to meditate on our state of affairs. Poetry about current events is getting created and shared more than ever before. And Poets Reading the News is where that poetry calls home. We publish renowned poets, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists, and emergent writers from around the world.

Poets Reading the News was launched in late 2016 by editors Elle Aviv Newton and Jenna Spagnolo in Oakland, California. You can read more about our origins in this article by Ivoh Magazine.

We’re here for readers to learn and process the news in a unique way. We’re here for writers to create original, startling, thoughtful and innovative poetry and prose about what’s happening in the world. We’re here to help connect and support a poetry community that is handling headlines with courage and creativity.

Poets Reading the News is a 501(c)3 fiscally sponsored non-profit. We are entirely supported by readers and writers that find this work meaningful and essential.
